Williamsburg Contra Dance
Due to COVID-19, we will not be restarting the monthly Williamsburg Contra Dance in Norge in September 2020 . Once there is a clear path to resuming our monthly gatherings, a notice will be posted and word disseminated through all of our communication channels
The Williamsburg Contra Dance Community is a diverse and beginner-friendly group dedicated to celebrating this American tradition. We dance to the live music of the Friends of Appalachian Music (FOAM). Each dance is taught and called so no experience is required.
Partners aren’t required, so come alone or bring a friend! If joining for the first time, come early: most of the teaching happens in the first 15 minutes. We can’t wait to share our love of the dance with you!
Dances are held in Williamsburg, VA in the historic Norge Community Hall from 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm on the first Saturday of the month, September – June. There is a $10 suggested donation at the door.
Contra is a social dance and an American tradition that is danced to live music. Each dance is made up of long lines of couples and each person will progress up and down the line, dancing with everyone in the dance hall. The dance is led by a caller, with each dance containing several repeated moves. Many of the moves are simple enough to master early in the night – if you can walk, you can contra!
